Articles, Papers & Presentations

This is a short op-editorial page article I wrote for The Asheville Citizen-Times, focusing on the relationship between child abuse and adult sexual assault. The article was joint acknowledgement of Child Abuse Awareness Month and Sexual Assault Awareness Month. For April, 2008. It is a .DOC file. Here is a link to the published version, which appeared on 04/13/08.

This is a powerpoint presentation for a workshop about the pluses and challenges of providing therapy in a fast-paced, primary care setting. The focus was my work in the Buncombe County Health Center's Primary Care Clinic. The 2-hour workshop was part of the 2008 North Carolina Counseling Association annual conference in Durham, NC, in February, 2008.

At the 2007 North Carolina Counseling Association conference, I gave this workshop on Brief Eclectic Psychotherapy, a brief-oriented approach to treating psychological trauma, especially Type I, or event-driven, trauma. I have used this approach, and variants of it, with some success in the Primary Care Clinic at the Buncombe County Health Center. Clinical trials in Germany and the Netherlands also have shown positive results.

Here is a brief powerpoint presentation about my research on male domestic violence offenders. This version of the presentation was made at the Nov. 9-11, 2006, conference of the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation.

I also have presented on batterer intervention at the IV World Congress on Traumatic Stress (Argentina, June 2006), the National Batterer Intervention conference in Detroit, MI (Nov. 2005), the NC Counseling Association conference (Feb. 2006) as well as other local and regional meetings. The thrust of the presentations focuses on the complexity of the batterers' childhood-based trauma and its relationship to their adult behavior. This has been a focus of my academic and professional research.

A Community Network: Characteristics and Applications -- a draft. This is the first pass at trying to distil my own thinking about community networks and to differentiate them from other kinds of networks. Feedback is appreciated to Stephen Snow.

You Deserve More Credit -- The first in a long, occasional series of practical columns for making everyday life better, this one focuses on how you can learn to give yourself more credit for what you do right, rather than focusing on what you do wrong. Syndicated nationally in June 2003.

Sacred Selfishness -- A May 30, 2003, book review I wrote for The Charlotte Observer of Jungian analyst Bud Harris's new book, "Sacred Selfishness: A Guide to a life of Substance. Good book. Worth reading."

Lighting Candles -- A February, 2003 article for Counseling and Values, the journal of the Association for Spiritual, Ethical, and Religious Values in Counseling, regarding the death of Sr. Mary Thomas Burke, Ph.D. She founded the UNC Charlotte counseling program and was a giant in counseling circles and in the Charlotte region, with keen wit and insight.

"Clients taught me how to be human" is an article I wrote that was published in the December 2002 "Counseling Today," an American Counseling Association publication (45/6, 20, 24).

"Rabbits, rocks and ressurrection" is an article I wrote following the Nov. 25, 2002, funeral for Mary Thomas Burke. This and the preceding article both are also on a Mary Thomas Burke web site.

Vigil reflection is a short reflection I wrote following the Nov. 24, 2002, Vigil for Sr. Mary Thomas Burke, who died on Nov. 22, 2002.

Alfred Adler: Patriarch of Modern Psychology -- This paper, written for a Counseling Theories class, shows the immense, and largely unacknowledged, role Alfred Adler has played and continues to play in modern psychology.

Is Online Counseling Ethical? -- This article actually is a 10-page paper I wrote as a requirement of a graduate course in counseling in June 2001.

The Digital Divide -- This is an an editorial-page article I wrote in January 2001 for the Statesville Record & Landmark which, sadly, does not archive articles electronically. It was one of several I wrote on this topic over a six-month period.

...More to come as I have time to upload it!
