Social value is you. Each person in a community.
The truth is that everyone in a community has inherent value and worth merely because they exist. This value does not come to them because of any work they do, any money they have or any special skills they might possess.
Existence itself equals value. Being a human being equals value.
The challenge in community networking is not just to create electronics that people can use but actually to create useful ways for people to share their substantial human/social value with the rest of the community.
This is vitally important to a community, for all communities need to take advantage of all the assets they can.
When people's personal, intrinsic value is recognized and can be brought into the community sphere, then the whole community benefits from that value. Conversely, when that value is not shared, the whole community is poorer for it.
As more and more people are able to share their uniqueness and personal value, the community can begin to get a fuller understanding of its overall community VALUES. In that way, then, encouraging the sharing of value leads to the sharing of values.
The more a community knows what it stands for and cares about, the better the community can respond to needs and opportunities that help both specific parts of the community and also the community as a whole.
The challenge of a community network is to provide different ways for that value to be discovered, realized and shared using both face-to-face communication and electronic communication.
Here's a look at the social value chain again. Perhaps you will be able to think of individuals and groups -- and their value! -- you haven't thought of before:
