"Involving Your Community: Outreach, Encouraging Volunteerism and Managing Volunteers"
Where are the volunteers?
EVERYWHERE! Don't shut out potential people because they are young, old or have a disability. It is tempting to do so because these people can require more time and energy. But their presence not only is the right thing to do, it also sends a clear message about your organization and its beliefs about inclusion. You cannot build a strong organization by just having your friends or old church members or people you look like you or talk like you help you out. If you want to be FOR the community you need to REFLECT the community. It takes energy and effort to go out and meet and invite in people from underserved or poor communities. But you can't serve these communities without them!
Examples: kids can teach other kids -- or adults. Elders often feel more comfortable with people their own age who will be patient with their learning styles. People with disabilities can lead your organization's positioning for others with disabilities, can do training, can even work from home if that is better for them.
